Academic Pathways Presentation

Medical Professions in the Military
On Friday, October 13, Mr. W. Scott Monks (parent of Jeremy, Class of '27), MPAS, PA-C visited the students in the new Academic Pathways program to discuss his career in military medicine. Mr. Monks is a board certified physician assistant who served nine years in the Maryland Army National Guard with the 175th Infantry Battalion and the 104th Area Support Medical Company.

He deployed with the 175th Infantry from 2007-2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He works for the Department of Defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

His presentation touched on the many aspects of a medical career in the military, outlining the levels of care from battlefield to state-side, follow-up care as well as opportunities for various medical careers with the military, from doctor, nurse, or surgeon to research scientist or support technician. Mr. Monks discussed how students with interest in mathematics and engineering also have potential opportunities in biomedical engineering and biochemical engineering. Following the presentation, he gave the students a hands-on demonstration of the equipment and supplies in a medic's bag for urgent care use in the field.

Concordia Prep launched the Academic Pathways program this fall with concentrations in mathematics, health sciences, and honors, and will be initiating a Computer Sciences Pathway this year. Students in the program participate in field-specific enrichment activities including speakers, seminars, field trips, and internships.
