Saints' Spotlight – Varsity Football Coach Joe Battaglia

Assistant Athletic Director, James Peters
In this installment of Saints Spotlight, we check in with Concordia Prep football coach Joe Battaglia, who has guided the Saints to a 22-7 record in his three-plus seasons, including the 2021 MIAA B Conference title in what was the program’s first league crown since it shared the C Conference title with St. John’s Catholic Prep in 2007. His Saints (2-1) open B Conference play this weekend against the Crusaders of St. Paul’s (2-1) following a 46-0 pummeling of Old Mill High School.

Here is a deeper dive into the Saints head football coach:

Go Navy, Beat Army: Battaglia spent four years as a defensive analyst for the United States Naval Academy before coming to Concordia. He equates that 2021 B Conference crown with defeating Army in the 2019 season that included an 11-win season and the capture of the coveted Commander-in-Chief trophy given to the service academy team with the most wins in head-to-head competition each fall. Battaglia spent 13 years in total as a college football assistant coach before heading to Concordia Prep.

Falling back: Battaglia stated his worst head coaching moment to date is falling, 21-13, to St. Mary’s in last year’s MIAA B final at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. The Saints were bidding to become the first team to capture back-to-back B Conference crowns since St. Mary’s did so in 2017 and ‘18.

Family Legacy: Battaglia is one of four siblings to play college athletics. He played four years as a Linebacker at Guilford College (N.C.). Prior to that he was a Senior Captain at Gilman School where they captured multiple MIAA A Conference Championships.  His junior year they finished with a USA Today National Ranking of #12.

Memorable month: June of 2020 proved to be a memorable month for the Battaglia family for both good and not so good reasons. He and his wife Kim Battaglia welcomed their first child, Joseph, Jr., nicknamed JJ, on June 5 of that year, but twenty days later, they lost their Annapolis apartment to a fire. That same day, Battaglia learned that he had been hired by Concordia Prep.
